Reflection of AED 200

  1. My expectations of this course was to be able to learn about different art techniques, be able to use them as well as learn a lot about artists and their artwork and learn art terms to expand my knowledge. I would say that my expectations were met and I learned more than the expectations I had. I got to analyze artwork which I never thought I would have learned how to do but I did!
  2. In my initial posting I said that art was a way for one to express themselves. I feel that this definition of art is still true for me even after taking this course.
  3. My favorite artist at the beginning of the semester was Pablo Picasso. Although this course has introduced me to many different artists who are awesome Pablo Picasso is still my favorite because of his uniqueness and how he distorts certain objects in this artwork.
  4. This was my first online course and I feel that with the right discipline and determination an online course is not that hard. If you take time to put the work in as you would if you actually went to the class on campus there are no problems. I plan to take more online courses in the future.

Self- Portraits Art Making/Material Exploration Blog

  1. I selected the inspiration pieces due to the realness you get from looking at them. I also picked on piece by Pablo Picasso because he is one of my favorite artists.
  2. The media I used was pencil because pencil is the easiest media for me to draw with.
  3. The challenges I faced was trying to make the portrait of myself look real and not to look as scary as it came out to be. Another challenge was the fact that it was a portrait of myself so I wanted it to look exactly like me, which is hard to do and I didn't get to overcome this challenge. I didn't fully overcome these challenges but I did my best to fix my portrait. My lack of drawing experience sure does show in this portrait of myself.
  4. This piece represents me by the happiness that is shown in this portrait.
  5. The elements I used were line, shape, color and texture. The principles I used were movement and emphasis.
  6. Honestly, I did not like this project due to the fact that I am not an artist and I cannot draw. Trying to draw and get something good out of it is really challenging for me.
  7. I think that my final work is the best I could do although I know it could be better.

Project #4 Reflection Journal

The process I used while creating my Art Curator Exhibition was as follows. First I explored many artworks on Artstor before I decided on what theme I was going to use. This was not easy because there was many different themes to pick from but I picked one that was meaningful to myself. After picking my theme I had to limit to using 10 artworks that I felt spoke to that theme the most. This step was also hard because there were so many artworks to choose from. After picking my 10 artworks I wanted to use, next came the layout for the powerpoint. Picking a layout that complimented my theme was an easy task to accomplish. After picking the layout I put in the artworks in order due to their elements and principles that they had in common. Once I was done picking the order of the artworks in the powerpoint, I used one artwork per slide and did a description, interpretation and explanation for each artwork. This project allowed me to use the skills and knowledge I have gathered through the course of this course in order to make the completion of this project possible.

Video Review: Week Thirteen and Fourteen

  1. The key concepts from the video, The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art, are that lowbrow means a person regarded as uncultivated and lacking in taste. Most of the lowbrow artists have nudity and are explicit and they refer to that as lowbrow imagery. Lowbrow is now called pop surrealism and is becoming more common. In the video, Tate Modern, there were many key concepts. Tate Modern is referred to as a "make you think" theme park. Many people go there for the size and because it speaks directly to the audience. People feel confident when they go there and are part of the learning process. Another key point was that Tate Modern is a challenge convention, you look at everything through present day eye. In the video, An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan Museum, a key concept was they spoke about curator's and their role. Curator's explain the artwork, they plan the exhibit as well as the theme to go along with it. Another key concept that was said in the video is that when viewing art you never fully get rid of personal taste. The Metropolitan Museum is referred to as the encyclopedic museum.
  2. The last video, An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan Museum, related to the creation of the art exhibition project. In the video they explain in detail was a Curator was and how important their role is. Learning this and their importance helped me to get a better understanding to the role I am playing in this project.
  3. The video, The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art, I personally didn't like and I didn't think had anything to do with helping me create my project, The video did provide me with information on lowbrow because before viewing this video I had no idea what that even meant. The video, Tate Modern, I liked a lot because of the artwork that was shown. The video, An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan Museum, helped me gather a better understanding for what a curator is and played a role in the creation of my project.

Video Review Module 12

1. For this assignment I chose to watch the videos Andy Warhol: Images of an Image and Isamu Noguchi: The Sculpture of Spaces. I chose Andy Warhol's Images of an Image because it seemed like an interesting topic. I also chose The Sculpture of Spaces because the title caught my attention.

2. In the video Andy Warhol: Images of an Image some of the key concepts that stood out to me was that they talked about how to transfer an image from being a photo and make it into a silk screen, to do this you have enlarge the image several times. While I was watching the video I was interested in the part when they were talking about Andy Warhol's portraits of the women who they made one picture into ten but changing some little things in each one to make them different then the last one. In the portrait of imitation only the basic traits of the face survived because Warhol would make subtle changes to the surroundings or minor changes to the face. In the video Isamu Noguchi: The Sculpture of Spaces I noticed that many things go into making sculptures for spaces. One of these things is that the space in which the sculptures are being placed, it is important that the sculptures are one with the surroundings and that they are not overshadowed by buildings or other objects. The placement of sculptures is also important because it sets the mood for the overall piece.

3. The video Andy Warhol: Images of an Image relates to the textbook in a couple ways. One way that I found is that in Chapter 22 it talks about how Andy Warhol used silkscreen to recreate dozens of duplicates of his artwork. In the textbook it shows a picture of one of his works which is of Marilyn Monroe, which he used silk-screening to recreate this work. The video Isamu Noguchi: The Sculpture of Spaces relates to the video in a couple different ways. One example I found in the textbook is Ernesto Neto's Leviathan Thot in Paris. The sculpture is very well designed and everything in the sculpture is very well placed.

4. My opinion of the film Andy Warhol: Images of an Image was that it was somewhat hard to follow at certain times but it did help me understand some different art techniques and gave me a better understanding of how Andy Warhol created his works of art and what made them so unique. The film Isamu Noguchi: The Sculpture of Spaces was also tough to focus on as the video sometimes went half minutes without and talking and just showing pictures and not really talking about many key concepts. Although it was tough to focus on I do think it helped me understand the importance of sculptures and how much work goes into making them successful works of art.

Art Gallery Visit #2

Step 1: The Exhibition
1. Margaret L. Wendt Gallery
2. Buffalo's History

Step 2: The Gallery
1. Dimmed lighting throughout the gallery but lights directed on the artwork
2. Dark grey
3. The materials that are used are picture frames, glass boxes filled with materials, there are rocks as an artwork as well as a gate located in the middle which catches the viewers attention as soon as they walk in.
4. The movement of the artwork takes you through the whole gallery. No matter what point you start at the pictures along the wall guide you through the while exhibit and keeping your eyes following the direction you are walking in.

Step 3: The Artwork
1.  There are artworks on the wall which are spaced evenly along each wall. If there was more than one artwork for that landmark the artworks were placed closely together to group them correctly.
2. The artworks are similar because they all have the common theme of buffalo's history. They all deal with the first drawings of either important buildings or parks located in Buffalo.
3. The artworks are different because they all deal with a different location, a different important factor in Buffalo's history. They are all unique to the theme in their own way.
4. Some of the artworks are in glass cases, many others are in picture frames and some of them are just placed on the wall without frames.
5. The artworks are easily identified and labeled by plaques located by the artwork to give the viewer the name of the piece, who made it as well what was used(the medium).
6. Most of the artworks are spread out throughout the gallery but the artworks that have the same subject are placed closely together.

Subject 4: Art Criticism Exercise
1st artwork:
Artist: Bob Collignon
Title of work: Site of the former Michigan Avenue Y.M.C.A
Media: Photograph
Date: 2015
Size: N/A
1. Be receptive: In this photograph I like how the clouds appear and even though the photo is in black and white I like how the lighting is captured in this photograph.
2. Description: In this artwork I see an open field and in the background there are trucks, multiple buildings and cars.
3. Formal analysis: The elements that are used in this photograph consist of line; created by the objects in the distance, shape; it occupies an area with identifiable boundaries, light; shades of light and dark values and space by conveying the idea of nothingness. The principles that are used are unity thought the sense that the objects belong together, variety by the interest due to its difference, emphasis because our attention is drawn to what is going on in the background.
4. Bracketing: This artwork reminds me of an abandoned area that has great potential. This reminds me a lot about the city of Buffalo in which we live in.
5. Interpretation: I think that the artist is trying to convey the atmosphere of Buffalo. By taking this photograph the artist captured calmness and the potential for something great.

2nd artwork:
Artist: John E. Brent
Title of work: Vintage bricks and detritus from the former site of Michigan Avenue Brach Y.M.C.A
Media: Sculpture
Date: 1926-28
Size: N/A
1. Be receptive: I like how there is a variety of pieces of the Y.M.C.A.
2. Description: In this sculpture I see bricks, rocks and rusty metal placed strategically among the block its sitting on.
3. Formal Analysis: The elements used are mass through the volume of the shapes, light through the three-dimensional appearance, color through the colors of the bricks rocks and metal, texture through the surface quality you can feel without touching and space through three-dimensional space. The principles used are unity because these objects have oneness; they belong together, variety because there are different object used to keep the viewer interested, scale in relation to the "normal" size and proportion because of the size relationship between the parts of the whole.
4. Bracketing: Nothing in this artwork reminds me of anythings.
5. Interpretation: I think that the artist is trying to show the history of the Michigan Avenue Branch Y.M.C.A.

3rd artwork:
Artist: John E. Brent
Title of work: New building for Cold Springs Baptist Church
Media: Colored pencil on paper
Date: January 24, 1955
Size: N/A
1. Be receptive: I like the colors that are used, they are clam colors and capture your attention. I also like the sense of community you get from looking at this artwork.
2. Description: I see trees, people and a building.
3. Formal analysis: The elements in this artwork are line through the symbols guiding you throughout the artwork, shape by the two-dimensional form it takes on, light by the radiant energy, color by use of warm and cool colors, and space through the flat surface of the work. The principles used are unity through the sense of oneness that the object portrayed belong together and subordination because certain areas of the artwork are purposefully made.
4. Bracketing: The artwork reminds me of the Church I used to attend when I was little, it was a happy place and through the use of the colors you feel like the Church portrayed is a happy place.
5. Interpretation: The artist is trying to get the viewer to see the sketching of the Church as it was being made and also to see the history of the Church as well.

Question: Usually when visiting and art gallery you go to look at the artwork and interpret it. During this visit I not only viewed the artwork but I also looked at the exhibition from a different perspective looking at how the artworks were spaced and the space in the exhibit. It was hard for me to do since I am not use to doing so but once I looked around at the gallery I have picked it wasn't so hard to do after all. The hard part would have to be changing my mind to think differently while visiting this exhibition.

Video Review Module 11

  1. The two films I have selected to view were Matisse and Picasso and The Impact of Cubism. The reason behind picking the video Matisse Picasso is because Picasso is one of my favorite artists and I felt this would be a great opportunity to learn more about him and his work and this video seemed to do exactly that and it also informed me a lot about Matisse. I picked the video The Impact of Cubism because I don't know much about cubism so I used this opportunity to pick the video that provided a better understanding.
  2. In the video Matisse and Picasso, I learned that the relationship that Matisse and Picasso have is unique. Matisse likes to rationalize and Picasso is impulsive. In the video it said that Picasso liked Matisse's simplicity and that Matisse used innocence and Picasso used the intellectual approach with art. In the video, The Impact of Cubism, I learned that cubism represents form and shape. In the video they talked a lot about certain artworks and how they had cubism. One artwork that I learned a lot about was The Breakfast Table by Juan Gris'. I learned that this piece of art had strong shapes and had still life. The artist stated that he works with abstraction and ends with the real objects and he was a cubist artist. Another artwork I learned a lot about was Champ de Mars by Robert Delanay. I learned that it was a period piece, and that the subject takes on life and color the viewer would not expect. This piece of art had spatial relations as well as the element of time and memory which I thought was interesting.
  3. The readings relate to the text because in chapter 21 the author talks about how Henri Matisse was the leader of the wild new trend of expressionism. The book also talks about how Pablo Picasso wanted to reduce the role of color to a minimum to concentrate on the problem of representing form in space which he latter embarked on the movement known as cubism. The book went into detail about cubism but the video helped me to get a better understanding with all the examples and the in-depth explanations. The reading talked a little about Matisse but the video provided me with much more information to take away about him.
  4. I really enjoyed both videos, at first I thought it was just going to be an hour long video dragging on about points that were irreverent but these two videos were an hour long about important and intriguing information. The videos and the reading helped me get a better understanding about cubism and its important role in artwork.

Module 10 Video Review

  1. I have picked the videos African Art: Legacy of Oppression and African Art because I have always been interested in learning more about Africa. I am currently taking a course involving African American literature and these videos provided me with information on the arts of Africa. I also picked these videos for a more personal reason and that being I have an adopted brother who is African American and I love learning about his culture.
  2. In the African Art: Legacy of Oppression video I learned that the Kongo region is home to 250 different cultures. I also learned that African Art affected the West because it is abstract, simple and dramatic. In African artwork the artists give psychological truth to human form. In the African Art video I learned that art is a part of daily life not only is it in their homes it is also in their dress and their hairstyles as a form of expression, art is also important in traditional African rituals. In Africa art emerged as a carrier for magic and rituals.
  3. In the text they talked about how tradition plays a role in art just like the videos did (Chapter 18). The text also stated that art in Africa serves as an agent to bring about desired state of affairs, through the contact with sprit powers in chapter 18. The videos elaborated on that idea because they stated African art is in their rituals which involve spiritual powers.
  4. I really enjoyed watching these films, they brought light on new ideas and concepts I once didn't know about African art. They provided me with more information as well as new information about different ways that art influences everyday life.

Module 9 Exploring Line

  1. Using my hand as the subject matter turned out to be very interesting. At first I didn't know to position my hand or how to go about doing it but having the example in front of me really did help. I didn't know how hard it was to draw my own hand until now!
  2. I used pencil because for me it is easier to draw with.
  3. It was definitely a challenge drawing with my non-dominant hand. At first it was difficult to even hold the pencil with my left hand, I wanted to switch over to my dominant hand. My drawings do show that drawing with my non-dominant hand was a struggle.
  4. The drawing of my left hand looks more like a hand than the drawing of my right hand. It took more time for me to draw my right hand over drawing my left hand. I do feel that the end result is successful, including detail in both.
  5. After this project, I would not consider using my non-dominant to create artwork in the future. I have a hard enough time creating artwork with my dominant hand and using my non-dominant was a real challenge for me.

Module 9 Video Review

The Power of Art: Caravaggio

  1. I selected this video because I wanted to know the meaning behind Caravaggio's paintings. His artwork can have many different meanings but getting to know more about them are why i choose this video.
  2. During this video I learned that most of his paintings were done in order to get himself out of trouble. He was always doing something wrong and on the run so his paintings served as an apology, for him to be forgiven from his sins. In some of his paintings he takes Gods and makes them into human form. One point I thought was interesting was how he clusters people/objects together to demolish the safety barrier between the viewer and the painting.
  3. The text, chapter 17, stated that Caravaggio's work has strong emotion, and uses dramatic lighting in his paintings. The video goes into detail about how much emotion is in each piece of art by stating the meaning behind it. The video also talks about his use of lightness and darkness and how it increase dramatic affect in his work.
  4. I really liked this film because it really went into detail about how much emotion or feeling can come out of one artwork. This video brought about many great examples of Caravaggio's art and elaborated on the points that were made in the text. Artwork is very powerful and can have many different meanings and the video and text added more understanding to those points.

Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master

  1. I picked this video because I wanted to know more about how Albrecht Durer uses the process of aging in this artwork.
  2. During the video I learned that his artwork portrayed scenes from daily life. They were relatable in a way due to the fact that his artwork conveyed ideas from daily lives. He also did a lot of artwork on his family and used his process of aging that he is known for. He was very talented and started his artist journey when he was only 13!
  3. In the text, chapter 16, it is said that Albrecht Durer attempted to fuse Italian ideas and discoveries with the Northern love of meticulous observation. He felt that Northern art lacked theory and science which he incorporated into this work.
  4. This film seemed to lack detail but it went into more detail than the text about him and his artwork. I feel like the text incorporated him in but the video had only a little more detail about him. This video did add depth to the reading by having more details as well as describing him as a person.

Module 8 Video Review

1. The video I selected from the list given was The Greek Awakening: Art from the 5th Century B.C. I had selected this video because it seemed very interesting and provided me an extensive background of the history of art in Greece and how important it was during the 5th century.

2. In the video, The Greek Awakening: Art from the 5th Century B.C., I learned how Greece was the birth place of western civilization. During the 6th and 5th century's there was a revolution in art, architecture, philosophy, and theater. Human beings are the center of life in Greece which helped in shaping art into what it is today and Greece stands as the furniture of the mind. In the video, More Human Than Human, I learned about how important images have become. The human body is the most dominate image in art and it is something we see everyday.

3. The videos relates to the textbook in many ways, some of the ways are that the textbook talks about how the different countries have a different impact of art. The text book also talks about Greece's architecture and sculptures which is also talked about in the video.

4. My opinion on the films is that they helped me understand the way the civilizations and countries have shaped art and how we look at things today. These videos have helped me get a better understanding on architecture and sculptures that I think I may have not understood just by reading through the textbook.

Module 7 Video Review

1. In the first Video: Architecture: The Science of Design some of the things that stood out to me were that in years prior downtown cities were starting to become only places where people worked and now in todays society they are the central hub of the human activity. Another fact that stood out to me was that there were two different types of weight that a building has to withstand. The first is dead weight which is the weight of the building itself. The second is living weight which is the weight inside the building when furniture and people are inside. Also before buildings are built generally they are built on a smaller scale with the surroundings built also and they are put through a wind test to make sure they will be able to withstand high wind conditions. In the video Architecture as Art some of the concepts that stood out to me were that buildings usually show a connection between art history and the culture of the city in which it is being built. One other fact that stood out me is that architecture seeks to impress by image and dimension meaning how it looks and how tall the building is.

2. These videos related the the textbook in many ways. Some of the ways I noticed were that in the first video it talked about how some buildings if over 100 stories tall can sway as much as 1 meter. In the book they talk about a variety of materials used to build and one of them is steel which makes a building more sturdy. In the second video they talked about how architecture seeks to impress by image and dimension, this is also talking about in the text when they talk about American skyscrapers and how they are some of the most admired buildings around the world.

3. After watching these films I feel like I have a better understanding of how architecture is used when determining everything that goes into build small builds or giant skyscrapers. These videos helped me understand some of the most important things about architecture and some things that I might have missed when reading through the textbook.

4. I chose these videos because I thought it would be interesting to learn a little bit more and watch a video on how it is that a building or giant skyscraper is designed and what it takes to make it actually happen. I chose the architecture as art video because I wanted to see how much art actually went into making buildings. I never would have guess that so much art actually went into the design of buildings before watching the video.

Video Review

Through the Eyes of a Sculptor:

1. There were many key concepts that I learned while watching this video. The first concept I learned was that molds are created when sculptors create a piece made out of clay and put thin metal pieces through it to hold in into place while they pour a waxy material over it and over time it hardens and then you peal the mold off which shows every little detail of the clay sculpture. Another key concept that I learned was that marble is a product of limestone which is formed when tectonic plates squeeze together underground forcing the ground to push up. But overall I learned that making a sculptor is all about personal preference and what your vision is for that work of art.

2. This video relates to the text in the area in which it showed us how to make clay models and then turn them into molds showing all the finer details. Another way the video related to the textbook is assembling. This was shown in the video when the pieces of the two horses and one sculpture of a man was put into one piece.

3. My opinion of this film was that it was very interesting in showing me how everything came together and how everything actually worked and all the little things that went into making a sculpture and the amount of history that is actual behind it. I feel that this gave me a better understand of how sculpting and crafting works.

Glass and Ceramics:

1. In this video there were also many key concepts that I found very interesting. The first key concept was that glass is made from sand which is the most abundant substance found on earth. The second key concept I thought was interesting was that glass is shaped with iron or wood that is shaped and the glass is rolled over it while the person blows air into the glass through a pipe. The last key concept which I found the most interesting was that stain glass windows are made from each individual pieces of glass and are hand cut and hand painted.

2. This video related to the textbook when they talked about the stain glass windows. These stain glass windows are hand cut and painted and can take months to make but the finished product looks amazing once put in the perfect spot. Each piece of glass is fit into a metal strip which is then soldered together to hold them in place.

3. My opinion of this film was that it was very informational and it helped me get a better understanding of this process and how this type of products were made. This process was very interesting to learn about and even better to watch someone do it on a video.

Peer Review

Hyperlink the Blogs you reviewed into your Blog:
First Peer: http://knpappa3253.blogspot.com/
Second Peer  http://fainquiry.blogspot.com/

Project #1: While viewing both peers projects I was amazed at how they used certain images for the corresponding Elements and Principles. Some of the images they both used were images that I would have never imaged to use for that specific Element or Principle that they used. It was an eye-opener that there are multiple Elements and Principles that you can take out of one picture and not everyone can necessarily see the same one that you see.

Project #2: The Blogs that I viewed had none of the same images that I used and that really shocked me. The images that they used though were awesome and well described.

One image that interested me after viewing my peers blog was, Frederick Childe Hassam Church at Old Lyme, 1905, oil on canvas. The connection I had with this was that there was so much emotion in that painting and I would love to know more about the meaning behind why it was made.

I feel that the peer reflection was very valuable to my learning because it allowed me to see what my classmates are doing but also gives me a chance to connect with them.

The comments I received on my Blog were very helpful and many of them had a lot of information that was useful for me. It is great to get feedback from others in the class.

Project #2

A. Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
  1. James Rosenquist's, Nomad, made an impression on me because it shows how much images impact our everyday lives. He used everyday objects or things in this piece  of work to show how to portray how images do have a huge role in our lives. This piece of artwork really made me think about how important images have become over the years and how we can't live without them.

  2. Philip Clarkson Elliott's, Shelocta, PA, made an impact on me because it has traditionalism in it. This painting portrays a sense of home that relates to many. This artwork caught my attention because of how realistic it is and it really makes you wonder the true meaning behind it.

B. What artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?

     1. Raoul Dufy's, Le Pantheon et Saint-Etienne-du-Mont, made me feel a connection due to the fact that it portrays everyday life. It made me think that buildings and streets can have impact on someone's life. Everyday things may not seem to be a big deal but if you stop and look around you can see art everywhere. This painting is very relatable which is why I had a connection with it.

    2. Henri Matisse's, Notre-Dame, was another painting that I had a connection with. The colors that were used stood out to me and caught my eye. This was another artwork that can be seen as everyday life. Landscape paintings seem to speak to me on multiple levels but also seem to give me a feeling like I am actually in that area that is being shown.

C. Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why? .

      1. Maurice Utrillo, Houses on the Island of Ouessant, Brittany, was one painting I would like to know more about. It's a landscape painting with a few people and a community of houses. I would like to know more about the meaning and why this area spoke to the artist.

      2. I would like to know more about Jasper Johns, Numbers in Color. This piece of art stuck out to me and got my attention due to the colors he uses, the texture you can feel from just looking at it as well as the rhythm of the numbers. He used many elements of art as well as principles into the making of this artwork. I would like to know more about the process he used to incorporate the elements and principles all into one piece as well as the meaning behind why he created this.

Logo Design

1. I thought that creating my logo was a fun and creative task. It got me thinking of many different ideas on how I would express myself in just one word. Although it started off to be hard at first the more I got more ideas on the page picking the right one was no problem.

2. The process I took while coming up with my logo was think of one word as to how I would describe myself. Many words came to mind and many different logos but narrowing it down to one seemed to be the hardest. It was not easy picking just one word or picture to describe myself because I feel as though there was never the perfect one. Throughout the process of creative thinking I finally picked the one with the most meaning behind it as one that truly does describe me the best.

3. The most important discovery I made while making my logo was there are many different ways to portray myself. Another important discovery I made was one logo could speak to everyone about who you are as a person. It is crazy how one image can tell a lot about yourself.

4. The information I learned from the PowerPoint helped me start to generate ideas as well as how to eliminate them. The video, Graphic Design: What's in a logo, helped me the best to understand that a logo has to manipulate space as well as be a simplistic work. The video taught me that the more simple it was the better off it would be and the more space I use the better. Logo's are strong, simple and capture the essence and that is exactly what I used when making my logo. In my opinion this video made the most sense to me and helped me when making my logo. I feel as though the video, Bottled Up: Repackaging the Design, didn't make an impact on my logo making process.

Exploring Value and The Subtractive Color Theory

1. My thoughts on the value scale were that it was fairly easy, the only problem was trying to get the shading right. My thoughts on the color wheel were that it was difficult. The instructions were unclear and the colors I have bought didn't work well. I did the best I could and it seemed to work but out of the two assignments this is the one I had the most difficulty with.
2. The media I used was a scanner. It felt as though the images came up better when scanned directly onto the computer.
3. The most important discovery I thought came out of the value assignment was the different values that came come from just one utensil. The most important discovery I thought came out of the color wheel assignment was how mixing just two colors together can produce a completely different color. Some of the colors I mixed together came out producing a color I didn't know was possible.
4. The videos on watercolor helped me the most with this project because of the important information it provided. In the video they said that texture of the paper shows through and that was shown to be true. It also provided me with new knowledge on how to use watercolors that I didn't know before. I felt and though the videos were very helpful in understanding both watercolor as well as the video showing me how to do the value scale.

Reflection of Project 1

During this project I took on a lot of creative and technological processes. At first I had to get a solid understanding for each of the elements and principles of art. After studying them, I then had to come up with ideas for how I was going to capture multiple photos which contained those elements and principles of art. This I found to be the hardest part because most of the ideas I came up with could have went along with more than one element or principle. Therefore, I had to get pretty creative with some of these photographs but luckily for me I had some picture from New York City on my camera that had some of these elements and principles in them. I had no issues with the technological aspect of this project and I really enjoyed doing this project it was fun to go around be a photographer for a day!

Color Theory and Emotional Effects

  1.          Color which is one of the elements of art is defined as an object producing different sensations on the eye resulting from the way the object reflects or emits light. Color defines lines, shapes, forms, and space.  Color plays a role on our emotions for many different reasons, and one being the color alone. Different shades of colors play with our emotions and we get a feel of what the artist is trying to portray. For example, black is a dark color so one might feel sad or gloomy where as a yellow might make someone cheery and happy.
  2.       The theory of art that most intrigues me is that all colors are dependent on light. I didn’t know that due to light the colors we see are just a reflection of light rays. I find this most interesting because the colors we see come from something that can be changed which is light and in all color is just a function of light.
  3.       In the color video, one point that stood out the most to me about color was that they stated it was hard to paint emotion. That was hard for me to believe because whenever I see a painting all I see is all the emotion it portrays and how all the colors work together to give you that emotion you feel when you look at it. What the viewer of the art work didn’t know that it took a lot of time and effort to get those emotions out there onto the canvas and it isn’t easy to just paint what you feel especially with many different colors. You have to get the colors to complement each other to get everything in sync.
  4.       In the Feelings video, the point that made the biggest impact was the point he made about artists and how they use space to heighten feeling. Also the point when he said artists portray feeling through the use of light and shade. With using the space and using shade and light to ones advantage they can have many different forms of feeling going throughout their work of art. Also with doing so they are giving the view different emotions as they look at an art piece and all of those emotions one feels comes from the elements of art.
